As long as you install the web drivers from nVidia, Yosemite seems to run very well with it. However, even a cheap 970 is still in the $300 range and I can't say for sure how the 2008 MP would handle it. If you're just looking to put models into the editor for portfolio purposes, I'd second Jeff's rec for the 5870. Aside from the ball bearings in the GPU cooling fan failing a lot, those cards were very solid. Hope this helps.
It showed the discrete card in the diagnostic utility, and the technician wasn't sure if that was the faulty one or the one that was detected. The technician thought that the discrete card was faulty, which makes sense because I don't think the IGP would be likely to fry unless the CPU did too, which it didn't. He said that the logic board was causing the battery to not charge. The technician at the Genius Bar was very friendly and knowledgeable but I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to try to fix this laptop.

I did not install any driver because my understanding is that the GTX 680 is supported out of the box (except that I have not flashed yet, so I can’t get the boot screen just yet) When I boot the Mac I can hear the chime sound, and I’m pretty sure it does boots, just that the screen is black. Is it because of the missing 6pin cable? Or is it because I need to install drivers?
